Short Communication: Morphological, biochemical, and molecular identification of cellulolytic bacteria isolated from feces of endemic tropical herbivores

Abstract. Suharti S, Novrariani N, Wiryawan KG. 2023. Short Communication: Morphological, biochemical, and molecular identification of cellulolytic bacteria isolated from feces endemic tropical herbivores. Biodiversitas 24: 4046-4051. Indonesia has herbivores that consume lignocellulose feedstuffs including grass, tree foliage, rice straw, legume, indicating the presence in their gastrointestinal tracts. Therefore, aim this study was to isolate identify herbivores, anoa (Bubalus depressicornis), banteng (Bos javanicus), muntjak (Muntiacus muntjak), timor deer (Rusa timorensis). Bacteria were using serial dilution technique screened on Carboxy Methyl Cellulose (CMC) media. The selected isolates identified based morphological biochemical characteristics, cellulase enzyme activity, 16S rDNA. result showed a total five bacterial anoa, banteng, muntjak, deer. In addition, exhibited characteristics facultative anaerobes with gram-positive coccus, fermenting glucose, fructose, sucrose, starch, cellulose. Based index, high activity an index about 1.2, potential as cellulose-degrading bacteria. Molecular phylogeny analysis 100% similarities Enterococcus faecium. especially possess have probiotic for ruminants feed forage-based diet. This is first document feces.
